Happy Independence Day

Happy 4th of July weekend everyone!  This is my favorite weekend of the whole year!  I think it's my favorite because I have such fond memories of the 4th as a kid.  The 4th was always filled with baseball, tag, hide and seek, kick the can, and playing with fire of course.  Who doesn't love playing with fire??!!  It was always a huge gaggle of family and friends enjoying a ton of good food, beverages, and fun at Grandma and Grandpa Prochaska's house.  As a kid, we couldn't get there earlier enough (and we didn't get there early - like 4:00pm), and we left in the wee hours of the morning.  I remember collapsing in bed, and when I woke the next morning, my kid body was literally sore and fatigued from playing so hard.

Thankfully, it's the same for my kids.  Since my kids can remember, the big celebration has either been held at Aunt Jane and Uncle Bill's or at Uncle Marty and Aunt Dena's.  Both families/places have replicated the experience that I remember.  Games, family, friends, food, and fire.  Perfection.  Today is the day, and I will tell you all about it in a future post.

But I digress, what have we been up to for the last several weeks?  Well school is out!  It's July, so you already knew that.  We've been busy as bees, maximizing our summer fun.  I signed the girls up for gymnastics this summer.  We've never done gymnastics, but our neighbors do it.  And my cousin, Molly, has done it for years and loves it.  Hannah has been asking for about 2 years now to do it.  So I caved and we signed up.  I figured since we aren't doing a summer vacation this year, we should do other fun things instead.  And...they L.O.V.E it.  It has been the best thing ever.  I even love it so far.  We've done about 4 sessions, and I think it's going to help the girls become stronger and more flexible, which my kids need.  (They fall a little in the scrawny category.) (Except for Emma, who is a little portly.)

We also, at the advice of our neighbor, did the summer reading program at the library.  Umm...how did I miss this in the past?  It has been awesome!  The kids love going to the library and finding new books.  It has opened up the reading floodgates in our house.  Laura is at the place now, where she likes chapter books and is reading through them fairly fast this summer.  I remember this age, and I loved reading too.  She is reading the Spirit Animals right now, and she was reading some of the Never Girls series.  She checked out a few Ramona books too this week.  Hannah is not reading big books yet, but she has been reading some basic ones.  And she loves to look through books with pictures and make up her own stories :)  We are starting the first Harry Potter book to read together every night at bedtime.  Even Emma likes the library.  She has picked out several books and asks either Laura or I to read to her  more often than she used to ask.  I think the new rotation of books keeps her interested.

We've had a few cookouts with friends and neighbors too over the last couple of weeks.  We hung with the Childresses, whom we hadn't seen forever!  And we've enjoyed game night with the Wonderlys and the Lauves. Father's Day turned out to be a great day too.  The girls rode horses, and Matt, Dad, Ellen, and Justin played golf.  We went putt-putting and had ice cream last weekend.  And this weekend, we went to Zoombezi Bay and enjoyed Red, White, and Boom at the Manley's.  That brings you up to present!

Have an awesome weekend and God Bless America!!

I'll add pics later!
