Pumpkin Boogie

Hello All.  This year has certainly not been kind to me in regards to blogging time.  April was a fun month, but super busy.  And May is blowing away!  The end of school is rapidly approaching, and we are in full summer-planning mode.  Let me get you caught up on some highlights.

Matt and I went to the Garth concert in April - so so so so so fun!  I saw Garth at Cooper Stadium about 18 years ago.  It was raining, but Garth still put on an awesome show.  This year it was at the Schott, and he did not disappoint.  He put on an amazing show.  He played all of his classics and few new ones (I didn't even know he had new music).  At the end he did a 45 minute encore that was incredible.  People were requesting music that wasn't even his, and he was playing it off the cuff.  I am trying to remember some of them.  Matt remembered that he played "Rocket Man."  It was a great show.

The biggest event of May was Laura's first Holy Communion.  The day turned out perfect.  Rain threatened most of the day, but didn't end up being significant.  Laura looked beautiful.  We took lots of pictures around the church property and inside the church.  And of course we got some shots of her and her godparents, Ellen and Scott.  She was so nervous right before, but so excited too.  She sang so loudly during the songs that I could tell she was excited.  It was a beautiful moment and a great step in her faith.  Her teacher, Mrs. Kaiser, has written in her weekly correspondence to parents that the 2nd graders are enjoying taking part in the communion every Wednesday at their school mass.   All of the 2nd grade girls also had a special part in the May Crowning service, which was the Monday after First Communion.  They got to wear the dresses and veils again, and they each carried a bouquet of flowers up the aisle to the statue of Mary.  Then one of the girls with an eighth grade girl actually crowned Mary with a crown of flowers.

May has continued to move fast now that we are in the last weeks of school.  Hannah's last week of homework was this week, and Laura has completed all of her segments in Spelling and Lexia (language).  In Math, I think they are done with all their 2nd grade level stuff and are doing some 3rd grade material.  They had a great year.  Both girls enjoy school, but of course, are ready for summer.

We had their piano recital last night.  They both did really well this year.  Last year Hannah was super nervous, and I had to walk her up to the piano.  But this year she did much better.  Laura's song was Pumpkin Boogie, and Hannah loves to dance to it.  We shot a video of it this morning.  Check it out on FB.

We don't have heavy plans for summer, since I am having surgery the first of June.  But we will still do fun things.  We have a zoo pass, and my parents are on it.  And the kids will be going to Grammy and Papa's house a couple days a week, which is always an adventure.  Hannah really wants to go fishing with Papa this summer, and they always enjoy riding horses with Grammy.  They have fun in the woods or in the field or in the barn; there's an adventure around every corner at Grammy and Papa's.  It's a regular outdoor adventure park.

We have been planning our Disney trip too.  It had to be moved to November due to surgery, so we are reserving our meals and planning which days we will be at which parks.  The kids are soooo excited.  Laura thought it was only 100 days away, and we told her it was 180 days away. Oh the devastation!  We told her not to wish summer away.  For kids, the time always moves so slow.  For adults, it goes faster by the year.

Emma's verbal development has exploded.  The phrases she is using are hilarious.  I need to start writing them down again.  She is doing great with her teacher, Celeste.  And she enjoys playing mermaids (Ariel) with Emerson, her friend next door.  Although she still struggles with following directions, we may have found something for the moment that motivates her.  Want to know what it is?  Wait for it......screen time.  Shocker, I know.  She loves watching her Kindle, which she pronounces Kaaandle.  And if she's not watching Kindle, she wants a phone or a show on the TV.  Of course, there is only about 1 or 1.5 hours in the evening for screen time, so it's not like that is all she does.  But she treasures that time.  So if she gets a time out during the day now, she loses all screen time that evening.   She's not successful everyday, but it has gotten much better.  She is actually trying during the day and recognizes that there is punishment if she gets a time out.  Now, sometimes I think she is pushing the limit, understanding that she can push so far before she will get a time out.  But progress is progress, and I'll take it.  Emma is an all the way kind of kid.  She is either going to be really bad or the sweetest most loving kid you've ever met.  So I'm trying to treasure her sweetness because she's growing up so fast.
