Late Summer Days

Here we are already - in late summer.  I love late summer.  The sun shines a little differently, like looking back at a memory.  I appreciate the warm breeze a little more because I know it will cool off all too soon.  This summer I really never complained about the heat.  One, it wasn't that warm this summer, and two, our winter was so treacherous and traumatizing that I was super happy when it was over.  Anyway back to summer.  For me, late summer is always marked by the sound of locusts in the afternoon.  Time is always running out in late summer.  The days are getting noticeably shorter, and we are running out of days before school starts.  This is where we are right now - basking in the days of late summer.

Speaking of school, our kids are quite excited for school to start.  Laura has had a great summer, but she misses all of her friends.  She just loves school in general and the excitement that surrounds the beginning of the school year.  Hannah starts Kindergarten!  So naturally she got to participate in school supplies shopping and getting uniforms.  She looks so cute!  It's bittersweet.  I love seeing her so excited to start school, but I'm sad that it went so fast.  It seems once they start school, they aren't little kids anymore.  They start to become big kids rather quickly.  Time sure flies when you have little kids (and as you get older, but we'll just ignore that).  School will be a big adjustment for Emma too.  She will be the only one in daycare, and she will be by herself with my mom two days a week.  That will be a shock for her!  She will probably drive my mom nuts!  She will L.O.V.E her Grammy one on one time.  Emma loves Grammy days anyway, and now that it will be just her and Grammy, life doesn't get any better than that for her.

So back to the lazy, hazy days of  summer.  I'm jumping around a little today :)  One thing our last days of summer have not been this year is lazy.  We are packing as much into this August as we possibly can.  I took a half day off work randomly one Friday, and we spent the afternoon at the zoo.  It was so awesome.  The kids were surprised to be picked up early, and we let them ride all the rides.  They rode the pirate ride a few times and the bumper cars and the swings and many others.  Emma was mad that she's not quite big enough for a few of them, but she had fun too.  I so treasure these fun days!

Last weekend we went to our parish festival, which was beyond fun too.  Our kids again rode rides almost until closing.  Their favorite one was unexpected for me - wait for it - the slide.  You know, that big slide that they used to advertise at the state fair.  Well they had one of those at the festival, and the kids went down that thing about 50 times.  Another favorite was this little roller coaster called the Go Gator.  Emma was tall enough to ride it, and she went right for the front car!  She loved it!  She had her arms up yelling with glee.  One of the subsequent times she rode it, they had to stop the ride because Emma stood up!  Emma is definitely our fearless one.  There were a couple of bigger rides that the older girls could have ridden, but they were too scared.  I don't think Emma will be too scared when she grows a little taller.  Just sayin'.

So I guess it's the August of rides for us.  Next weekend we are headed to Kings Island for the first time with the girls.  I'm pretty excited.  I think they will love it.  Some friends of ours have given us some positive reviews and indicated that there is plenty there that the kids will like.  And if they get tired of rides, there's always the water park.  So I'm thinking they will enjoy it no matter what.  We'll see.  More to come.

We are also still in swimming lessons.  They will go on through September for us.  The kids are doing great and really developing.  I'm hoping at the end of this round of lessons, Hannah will have her strokes down enough to not use swimmies anymore at the pool.  She's right on the verge.  So I'm hopeful.  This is Emma's first round of lessons.  She's doing Ok, but she will have to repeat this level.  She's stubborn more than anything.  And she has to stop to go to the bathroom about 5 million times each lesson.  Ugg...

I hope you all are basking in late summer too!  Fall and cool temperatures will be here before we know it.  Of course will Fall comes our favorite time of the year.....FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!
